Chapter 28

When Evie walked into the apartment, it was five o’clock on the dot.

Kyle popped his head around the corner and greeted her with a pleasant “There’s my girl!”

The air smelled good. Food, glorious food! Earlier, when her mother had shown up unannounced to talk about orgies or whatever they called it, Evie’s appetite had disappeared. She’d thought she might never be hungry again, but she had been wrong.

“I got your favorite pizza,” Kyle said, walking over and waiting while she removed her shoes, then leaning down to kiss her on the lips.

She kissed him back and asked, “Pepperoni and mushroom?”

Kyle did that cute thing where he pulled his head back and gave himself a double chin. “Huh?” He continued in his dumb-guy voice, deep and slow. “I thought yer fav’rit pizza pie was the one with the tofu and the bean sprouts.” He grinned and relaxed back into his regular, conventionally attractive face. “Of course it’s pepperoni and mushroom. Double-double, just how my girl likes it.”

He was still standing in the hallway across from her, next to the closet where they kept the shoes, coats, vacuum cleaner, and an old dog crate filled with padded clothes for skiing. Evie stared at the closet a moment, having one thought: All our things are mixed together.

It was an unusual, random thought, and she hadn’t the time to decipher it before the interaction continued.

Kyle used his voice to force her attention back to him. “Tell me about this long day of yours.”

Her long day. She had dropped some hints by text message, but he didn’t know yet. He didn’t know that she knew about the gang breaking into the Greenwood house.

“Talk to me,” he said gently.

The softness of his voice completely undid her. She launched herself at Kyle, wrapping her arms around his strong, capable shoulders. He was not the most athletic of guys, but he was definitely a man, and feeling those muscles flex under her touch always calmed Evie. It was like having a loaded weapon. There for you if you needed it.

Kyle wrapped his arms around her loosely. He rubbed the small of her back with one palm.

“That pizza sure smells good,” he said into her hair. “I threw it in the oven to keep it hot while I waited for you.”

She pulled away. Evie knew a hint when it was dropped. She also knew that a man with a stomach full of food was a better listener than one without.

“Let’s eat,” she said cheerfully.

Kyle got the pizza out of the oven while Evie washed her hands.

The two sat at the kitchen bar. Kyle glanced at the couch and television longingly. They found it more relaxing to eat while zoning out, but lately, they’d been making an effort to behave like the adults they were. The counter was spacious enough and deserved to be used. Besides, the couch had recently been steam-cleaned, and they didn’t want to get it grimy again.

Kyle tipped back his bottle of pale ale then wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.
